Optical components such as filters, lenses, mirrors and polarizers are now widely used in medical devices for the detection of diseases and antibodies and allow testing with high specificity, sensitivity, repeatability and high-throughput. In many such devices the optical pathway relies either on the measurement of the absorbance or fluorescence of test samples.

The first part of this presentation will give an insight on selection criteria for optical components in the construction of medical devices using the detection of Sars-Cov-2 and ophthalmology as examples.

The second part of the presentation will take a detailed look at Aspheres which are critical components in many modern optical systems. The complexity of manufacturing aspheric lenses will be explored and the usage and benefits of different types – polished vs. molded – will be explained.
