The Swedish Photonics industry
has been experiencing a deep transformation since the burst of the telecom bubble in the early years 2000. From being largely dominated and driven by two big actors, Ericsson and Telia (-Sonera) in the 80s and 90s, and from a concentration in the telecommunication area, the Swedish photonics is now highly diversified and addresses basically all major application areas. The information and communication sector is presently employing only one eigth of the Swedish workforce in photonics, while at least 3 times as many are working with optical monitoring of different kinds for industrial applications and nearly 20% are developing solutions for the life sciences. The Swedish photonics employs about 8000 workers in over 250 companies and the compound annual growth rate of the sector is clearly larger than the average for the Swedish industry, somewhere between 3 and 10% during the last 10 years. Photonics is used everywhere and photonic solutions are opening new possibilities every day.
The Swedish Photonics Academia
Basically all major universities in Sweden have research groups in optics and photonics. More info about the research here!
